Dear Friends,

Our next meeting is Wednesday June 9th at the Salt Lake Public Library (210 East 400 South) in Conference Room C, accessible by the SPECIAL elevator just inside the EAST entrance.

Please join us for socializing from 6:15 pm > 7:00 pm or, if you prefer, come from 7:00 pm > 8:45 pm for our formal discussion. We provide coffee/decaf + chocolate chunk cookies -- or bring a sandwich/quiche/dessert from the Library Branch of the Salt Lake Roasting Company just inside the EAST entrance -- or bring your own snack/beverage.

Our focus for June 9th will be Pat’s proposal that we discuss Arizona's new immigration law for which the reading materials would be:

(1) the text of the Arizona law itself (which is now posted on our bulletin board = http://www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org),
(2) the materials posted on this bulletin board for our discussion of immigration on 10 January 2008, and
(3) whatever current (or non-current) materials any of our members would like to post.

SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENTS -- There are widespread news reports that approximately 20 additional states are considering enacting illegal-immigration laws based on Arizona’s and Arizona itself enacted earlier this week an ethnic-studies ban (the text of the ethnic-studies law and an L.A. Times article explaining the motivation behind it are also posted on our bulletin board).

To remind us of our discussion on 1/10/2008, there follows below Bill Vogel’s Rhetorical Questions contained in his proposed topic for the meeting and the Short Quiz for that meeting.

Q&A 7 of the Short Quiz for 1/10/2008 talks about a new Arizona illegal-immigration law “taking effect on January 1st" –- that was another law that took effect 1/1/2008.

Incidentally, if you peruse the materials for the 1/10/2008 meeting, please don’t be surprised that there are typically 250-500 “views” of each of the 25 items posted for our 1/10/2008 meeting.

As time moves along, the number of “views” of all of our materials increases. Presumably this is because university students around the country view our bulletin board as a good source for ideas for term papers and research projects.

Indeed, 250-500 “views” for materials for past meetings is “par for the course” with some items attracting considerably more attention, for example -

1. 848 “views” for a newspaper account of the 9/6/2007 bombing of Syria’s nuclear facilities by Israel for our 12/13/2007 meeting,
2. 784 “views” for the text of the 12/3/2007 report of the Director of National Intelligence claiming that Iran is not seeking nuclear weapons – for our 12/13/2007 meeting, and
3. 1,054 “views” of the Letter of “Yours Truly” to the Editor of the NY Times concerning “The Jena Six” – for our 11/8/2007 meeting.

BILL VOGEL’S RHETORICAL QUESTIONS CONTAINED IN HIS 11/19/2007 PROPOSED TOPIC OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION FOR OUR 1/10/2008 MEETING

1. Are "limousine liberals" once again "screwing the Democratic Party base" (please pardon my French) by championing the cause of illegal immigrants on the assumption that African-Americans "have nowhere to go"?

2. Who made the decision that the Democratic Party will champion the cause of illegal immigrants who tend to be family-oriented Roman Catholics (the quintessential "religious right")?

3. What does the polling show re championing illegal immigration since this seems to be looming as the second-most important issue in the minds of voters behind Iraq and the War on Terror? Should we "do what's right" or do what's in the best interest of the Democratic Party? And (warping back on the first question) what is right from the viewpoint of poor African-Americans and Native Americans vs. what may appear to be right from the viewpoint of illegal aliens enticed by American employers who "thumb their noses" at federal law making it a crime to employ illegal aliens?

4. Isn't the illegal employment of "undocumented aliens" by American employers really a form of "out sourcing" American jobs that can't physically be moved to low-wage nations such as China and India?

5. Isn't our society immoral to permit American employers to illegally hire "undocumented aliens" under de facto "slave labor" conditions just so that we can enjoy lower prices at the grocery store, etc.?

6. Why should so much be spent on social services for illegal immigrants (emergency-room medical care, school for their children, etc.), when we refuse to spend adequately for our permanent American underclass (African Americans and Native Americans) who are displaced in the job market by the illegal immigrants?

7. Why is there so much emphasis on spending a lot of money on security along our southern border with Mexico? Wouldn't simple enforcement of federal criminal laws against American employers who hire illegal aliens "remove the honey that is drawing the bees"? Isn't all the spending on our southern border really a part of the War on Terror rather than part of our immigration policy?

SHORT QUIZ FOR OUR 1/10/2008 MEETING

1. What do polls show is the most important issue for 2008 after Iraq and the War on Terror?

2. What is the relationship, if any, between illegal immigration and out-sourcing American jobs?

3. How does the 2006 illegal-immigration proposal of Pres. Bush which was championed by the Democratic Party but defeated by Senate Republicans compare to the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986?

4. What criminal penalties are prescribed for American employers who hire illegal immigrants?

5. Why have Messrs. George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton and George W. Bush refused to enforce these criminal penalties and why has Congress permitted them to shirk their duty?

6. In addition to violating their oath of office by refusing to enforce the law, are Messrs. George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton and George W. Bush guilty of anything else as a result of their refusal?

7. Is Salt Lake City a “Sanctuary City”?

8. What is the philosophy of “Sanctuary City” legislation?

9. Is each member of the Salt Lake City police force an “accessory after the fact” as a member of a conspiracy to violate Federal Immigration Law?

10. Do all Americans have a legal obligation “to rat” on anyone who violates any law, whether or not relating to illegal immigration?

11. What new Arizona law is taking effect on January 1st?

12. Are agricultural workers in the United States required to be paid at least the federal minimum wage?

13. Is the United States the only country in the world that bestows citizenship on children of non-citizens if the children are born in the United States?

14. To avoid having 13 questions, what is a “mule”?
