I propose "That Used To Be Us: How America Fell Behind In The World It Invented And How We Can Come Back" by Thomas Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum -- Hardcover 9/5/2011 Farrar, Straus & Giroux -- $15.24 + shipping from Amazon.com.

Thomas Friedman is the well-known NY Times Columnist and author.

Michael Mandelbaum is the Christian A. Herter Professor of American Foreign Policy at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and Chair of the Johns Hopkins Department of American Foreign Policy. He is the author of 13 books and the editor of 12 others. Last year, Foreign Policy Magazine named him one of the "Top 100 Global Thinkers" and The World Affairs Councils of America named him one of the most influential people in American Foreign Policy.

As explained on Meet the Press last Sunday (Sep. 4) by Thomas Friedman, America's success was built on 5 pillars = "Basically, educate our people up to and beyond whatever the level of technology is, whether it's the cotton gin, OK, or the super computer. Immigration, attract the world's most talented and energetic people. Third, infrastructure, have the world's best infrastructure. Fourth, have the right rules for incenting capital formation and risk-taking and preventing recklessness. And last, government-funded research. Put those together, stir, and bake for 200 years, and you get the United States of America."

It would appear that the book reviews the historical record in greater detail, and then provides concrete suggestions on how to restore each of the five pillars.

It will be interesting to see whether Thomas Friedman and his partner say anything about the "pillar" of US government funding of basic research regarding whether the US government should patent any inventions that result from such research and license companies (whether US or foreign) to use the patents ONLY FOR MANUFACTURING IN THE UNITED STATES !!!

Everyone will recall that at our May 2011 meeting, we had an unofficial six-degrees-of-separation e-mail campaign ("unofficial" because we had two dissents and our standard is a "consensus" defined as one dissent at most) to request President Obama to do precisely that.

Perhaps we should have directed our unofficial six-degrees-of-separation e-mail campaign at Thomas Friedman and his partner.

But why fret???

Thomas Friedman is very savvy and probably thought of this point himself!!!

And if he didn't, c'est la vie -- we can't be responsible for everything!!!
