Eat, Drink, Be Merry + The Hand That Was Writing On The Wall

Post by Pat »

.
John’s Apocalyptic Q&A’s, especially the culmination in Q&A-26 and Q&A-27, remind me of the stories of “Eat, Drink and Be Merry” and “The Hand That Was Writing On The Wall”!!!

**********
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY

This comes from the Christian Bible (Luke, Ch. 12, Verses 19-20) and echoes The Hand That Was Writing On The Wall story from the Jewish Bible.

Many of us, at various times during our lives, and the American electorate in particular in recent years, have adopted the philosophy of “eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we will also eat, drink and be merry”!!!

The response from God??? “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee.”

THE HAND THAT WAS WRITING ON THE WALL

This comes from the Jewish Bible (aka Christian Old Testament) -- Daniel, Ch. 5

Handwriting on the wall or writing on the wall is how this story is most often referenced in the mainstream media.

Which is one of my pet peeves, because the concept of witnessing a disembodied hand in the act of writing on a wall is much more chilling than merely seeing the result left on the wall!!!

This is the famous story of Belshazzar’s Feast which was captured in the immortal painting by Rembrandt who lived in the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam.

Babylonian King Belshazzar, son of King Nebuchadnezzar, was eating and drinking and making merry with his court when a disembodied hand began writing on the wall. In horror, Belshazzar summoned Daniel to interpret what the writing meant.

The answer???

God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. [That night, Balshazzar died.]

So what makes America think it can continue to wallow in “eating, drinking and making merry” while giving no thought to the cost???
