Messages From The Gurneys In Lieu Of A Second Short Quiz

Post by The Gurneys »

Submitted by Ted and Tucker Gurney IAW the recusal of John Karls vis-a-vis This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate.

Message from Tucker Gurney regarding “This Changes Everything” by Naomi Klein.

In two and a half weeks we will be discussing the book. We two are both finding it a slow read. Unlike her talk in Salt Lake City in November, which was concise and focused as well as dynamic and interesting, her book is diffuse and full of interwoven themes and interesting stories through which it is difficult to analyze her main points. As a reflection of this, the index at the rear is very long and very detailed.

We are going to take advantage of the index in this message to suggest specific key words to guide our reading and prepare us for discussion on February 17th. Some of these concern major themes. Some instead concern her language and her politics.

KEY WORDS
air travel
Blockadia
capitalism--attempts to mitigate climate change
carbon markets
climate change--as transformative force
climate debt
divestment movement
green technology
love of place in Blockadia movement
polluter pays principle
privatization--reversals of
re-communalization
re-municipalization
sacrifice zones
sustainability
worldview--communitarian; dominance-based; extractivist; regenerative

Message from Ted Gurney concerning the same book.

I also find it tough to read. My current theory about the book is that Klein is trying, or rather hoping, that climate change will force the US to become more “communitarian”, less capitalistic, more socialist, in order to survive. Will we have to change our political views to escape being drowned by rising oceans?

So I am currently trying to fit Klein’s book into my current theory. Maybe it will fit, maybe not. So far the science and the politics are in agreement.
