-----------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

Many of you will probably recall the 4/19/2014 notice 4 years ago that I would be taking a sabbatical to write a book about the materials in the third and fourth sections of http://www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org entitled “Inner-City Holocaust and America’s Apartheid ‘Justice’ System (In Honor of Jonathan Kozol and In Memory of John Howard Griffin).”

The time has come to write another book (this time on the topic of “The National Audubon Society Executes Great Salt Lake Death Warrant”) and, accordingly, I will be taking another sabbatical.

*****
Ad Hoc Meetings

As was the case 4 years ago, there may be Ad Hoc Meetings such as the 2 that occurred during that 9-month sabbatical.

If anyone would like to propose a topic for an Ad Hoc Meeting, please forward it to me and I will include it in the next Pre-Dawn Saturday E-mail (which may be irregular rather than weekly during the sabbatical if there are not a lot of proposals).

RSVP’s for the Wednesday evening 4-5 weeks after the Pre-Dawn Saturday E-mail containing the Ad Hoc Meeting proposal will be put in touch with the proposer.

If the minimum quorum for our regular meetings of 6 RSVP’s is attained, the group will have authority to issue one of our Six-Degrees-Of-Separation E-mail Campaigns. However, the normal promotional Short Quizzes, Suggested Discussion Outlines, etc., will not be provided.

*****
Short-Fuse Campaigns

As set forth on the face of the first section of http://www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org entitled “General Info and Info Re Next Meeting,” we have a Short Fuse Procedure for situations in which action would be required before the next meeting could be scheduled (for example, a governmental unit is soliciting public comments for a limited period).

In such cases, our Pre-Dawn Saturday E-mail invites all of our approximately 150 members to participate in a Short-Fuse Working Group.

This procedure will also be available during the sabbatical.

*****
Length of the Sabbatical

The 12 participants for our 6/13/2018 meeting were curious how long the sabbatical might last.

It is noted that the 2014 sabbatical 4 years ago lasted 9 months.

However, this time the events of the final chapter of the book to be written have yet to occur.

Your friend,

John K.

PS -- To un-subscribe, please press "reply" and type "deletion requested."

NB: Please do NOT block our e-mail because you are too embarrassed to request a deletion -- 10 of our approximately 150 regular e-mail recipients use Comcast.net which has an algorithm blocking all e-mails from a website for which a certain percentage of recipients have requested blockage AND 3 of our regular meeting attendees who use Comcast.net now can NOT receive our weekly e-mails.

Dear Friends,

One of our members sent an e-mail last Tuesday (two items down) containing the 2001 final column of a then-well-known syndicated columnist despairing of America’s political situation and recommending that all U.S. Senators, U.S. Congresspersons, the President, and all Supreme Court Justices should be voted out office. [BTW, since Supreme Court Justices are appointed for life, throwing them out would require impeachment and yes, judges/justices can be impeached.]

Yours Truly responded (the first item down) that the columnist would NOT have felt so frustrated if he had participated in a NON-PARTISAN PUBLIC POLICY STUDY GROUP THAT TAKES EFFECTIVE ACTION.

And listed 8 of the important actions our group has taken since last summer.

It occurred that only half of the recipients of the e-mail exchange are among the approximately 150 members of our organization.

And that you, the other approximately 144 members, deserve a “pat on the back” for your support!!!

So please, each of you, accept our deepest gratitude for your support!!!

Sincerely,

John Karls

Dear Jay,

Thank you very much for your e-mail of 24 hours ago on the referenced subject.

Charles Reese’s Final Column plea to “throw in the towel” by voting everyone out of power, rather than “taking effective action,” was very sad.

“Taking effective action” is the 37 campaigns undertaken during the 12.5 years of the existence of our organization and listed in the first section of www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org --

Looking at just the most recent campaigns listed there --

(1) Great Salt Lake’s “Death Warrant” may yet be avoided with litigation against the Mormon Church.

(2) Authoritarian Rule By Our Intelligence Services may yet be avoided.

(3) The Senate may yet junk its 60-vote filibuster rule.

(4) Resurrecting and reinvigorating McCain-Feingold’s campaign-contribution limitations -- which were held constitutional by the US Supreme Court in McConnell vs. FEC (2003) -- may yet be accomplished.

(5) Our campaign for “Holding China Responsible for North Korean Actions” last March (A) stopped the TV “talking heads” from constantly saying, as they had for years, that nothing can be done because Seoul is, militarily, a North Korean hostage, and (B) coincided with a “sea change” in the Chinese attitude.

(6) Solving Global Warming 100% Without Military Action (reprised last September) put on notice the Chair of the Harvard University-wide Committee on the Environment that thorium fission is the only fuel that would solve global warming 100% while being cheaper than any alternative so that it would not be necessary to, for example, invade China to prevent it from bringing on stream a new monster-size coal-fired electrical-generation plant EVERY WEEK.

(7) Putting on notice the Presidents of each of the 12 Regional Federal Reserve Banks how the $4 TRillion - $5 TRillion repatriation of supposedly “offshore” funds of US-Based Multi-National Companies that had piled up in their foreign tax-haven subsidiaries from exporting American jobs -- which repatriations occurred 2005-2007 as a result of the so-called “American Jobs Creation (sic) Act of 2004” -- forced the “chump” American companies (which had not exported American jobs and to which the funds had been loaned) to reduce their payroll and capital expenditures by $4 TRillion - $5 TRillion in order to repay the loans -- while the Federal Reserve continuously lamented in the headlines 2008-2010 that the “chump” American companies could not obtain financing in order to maintain American capital expenditures and payroll WITH NO UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WAS REALLY CAUSING THE 2008-2010 MELTDOWN!!! By putting the Presidents of the 12 Regional Federal Reserve Banks on notice LAST DECEMBER of (A) how the 2018 Tax Reform Act was poised to do the same thing all over again (estimates were that another $4 TRillion of profit had piled up in the tax-haven subsidiaries from exporting American jobs), AND (B) how the 12 Presidents would, as a result of that knowledge, be derelict in their duty if their Regional Federal Reserve Banks did not provide replacement loans to the “chump” companies so that America did NOT see another $4 TRillion reduction in American capital expenditures and payroll -- we should be able to take credit for averting another economic meltdown comparable to 2008-2010.

(9) And skipping No. 8 which is the same as No. 6 except for the decision maker addressed, you may recall how both you and Marcia (among the FOUR attendees of our 7/12/2017 meeting who would be considered conservative in conventional political terms) joined with the 5 attendees who would be considered liberal in conventional political terms -- to approve unanimously a campaign based on the fact that “Medicare For All” would save the U.S. government $300 BILLION PER YEAR (vs. merely saving $300 billion over the normal 10-year measurement period for legislation).

*****
It is respectfully suggested that No 4 (resurrecting and reinvigorating McCain-Feingold) would solve the problem of Charles Reese’s Final Column.

It is also respectfully suggested that an organization that focuses on public policy and takes effective action (vs. a partisan political group and vs. a mere self-edification group) can achieve many of the things over which Charles Reese was driven to despair.

*****
I am sorry that you did not RSVP for this month’s meeting on “The Case Against Impeaching Trump” by Harvard Law School Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz.

But delighted that you did RSVP for our Wed evening 9/19/2018 meeting on “How Schools Work” by Arne Duncan, US Secretary of Education 2009-2015.

Even more delightful would be each of the Cc’s of your e-mail deciding to participate in our 9/19/2018 meeting.

Your friend,

John K.

One of the most no nonsense articles about why our country is in the mess it is. Not Republican, leftist , democrat, centrist, or rightist should miss reading this, and especially any voter.

CHARLIE REESE'S FINAL COLUMN A GREAT READ!!!!!

Charley Reese's final column for the Orlando Sentinel...
He has been a journalist for 49 years. He is retiring and this is HIS LAST COLUMN.

This is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be. The article below is completely neutral, neither anti-republican nor democrat. Charlie Reese, a retired reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgments made that impact each one of us every day.

It's a relatively short but good read. Worth the time. Worth remembering!

545 vs. 300,000,000 People- by Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations.

The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash.

The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits.

The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes.

Who is the speaker of the House now ? He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan .. If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power.

Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power. They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses, provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees...

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

What you do with this article now that you have read it... is up to you.

This might be funny if it weren't so true.

Be sure to read all the way to the end:

• Tax his land,
• Tax his bed,
• Tax the table, at which he's fed.
• Tax his tractor,
• Tax his mule,
• Teach him taxes are the rule.
• Tax his work,

We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom , if agreed, stayed home to raise the kids.

What in the heck happened? Can you spell 'politicians?'

I hope this goes around THE USA at least 545 times!!!

YOU can help it get there!!!

GO AHEAD. . . BE AN AMERICAN!!!
