Dear Friends,

Our next meeting is THIS WED evening Feb 19 – 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm – at the Salt Lake Public Library (210 East 400 South) in Conference Room A.

**********
HUNGER IN AMERICA

The UN’s “Zero Hunger By 2030” Goal for its 193 member countries -- and whether the US has a “snowball’s chance in Hell” of itself meeting that goal, and what can be done about it.

The UN’s “Zero Hunger By 2030” Program info available at www.un.org/zerohunger/content/pathways-zero-hunger.

That the US has 5 million homeless INCLUDING 3 MILLION CHILDREN living on less than $2.00/day has been documented in ““$2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America” by Johns Hopkins Prof. Kathryn J. Edin and U/Mich Prof. H. Luke Shaefer (Houghton Mifflin – 2015).

Per the U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services, the 2020 poverty guidelines published 1/17/2020 are --

1 person in family/household - $12,760
2 persons in family/household - $17,240
3 persons in family/household - $21,720
4 persons in family/household - $26,200
5 persons in family/household - $30,680
6 persons in family/household - $35,160
7 persons in family/household - $39,640
8 persons in family/household - $22,120
Each additional person beyond 8 - $4,480

NB: Less than $2.00/day for 1 person = less than $730 (vs $12,760)!!!

AND less than $2.00/day for 8 persons = less than $5,840 (vs. $22,120)!!!

OUR PROPOSED E-MAIL CAMPAIGN

To raise the national minimum wage EACH YEAR to match the U.S. Dept of HHS’s poverty guidelines – decision maker(s) to be targeted also open for discussion.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR E-MAIL CAMPAIGNS

FIVE of our e-mail campaigns in the last TWO YEARS have been successful INCLUDING --

A 12/11/2019 update of our 7/12/2017 e-mail campaign entitled “Saving the U.S. Government $300 Billion/Year - Medicare for All” which was aimed at Sen. John McCain a mere 16 days before his iconic “thumb down” vote against “Repealing and Replacing” Obamacare, which failed by one vote.

The 12/11/2019 update was prompted by Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s DEFAMATION of Medicare For All by claiming that it would cost the Federal Government $52 TRILLION over 10 years – which is 41% over current Gov and non-Gov healthcare spending of only $3,683 billion/year -- which itself is DOUBLE the amount of only $1,944 billion/year if it were brought into line with the other 35 economically-developed countries in the OECD.

Beginning with the December debate, Sen. Bernie Sanders has begun parroting the points in our revised 12/11/2019 e-mail (“Saving The Gov $86 Billion/YEAR – Medicare-For-All”).

[Virtually all of the difference between $300 Billion/YEAR of SAVINGS and $86 Billion/YEAR of SAVINGS is due to the fact that, beginning in 2018, the Corporate Income Tax Rate was reduced from 35% to 21%. Which means that the COST to the government of the 55.1% of the U.S. population that obtains employer-provided health coverage (since it is deductible for the employer BUT non-taxable to the employee) was reduced to only 11.6% of the U.S. population having employer-provided health coverage provided courtesy of lost government tax revenues.]

**********
OUR FOCUS BOOK (not required to be read by first-time attendees per long-standing tradition)

Our focus book is the “classic” in the field of poverty - “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America” by Barbara Ehrenreich (Metropolitan Books 2001 – Paperback Version 2011 available from Amazon.com for $10.29 + shipping or $9.99 Kindle – 256 pages). [Salt Lake Library – 5 of 7 copies currently available; Salt Lake County Library – 2 of 4 copies currently available.]

The “classic” because, like “Black Like Me,” Barbara Ehrenreich decided despite having a PhD in Cellular Immunology that she would experience what it is like (despite remaining white) to be a waitress, hotel maid, cleaning woman, nursing-home aide and Wal-Mart sales clerk – just like John Howard Griffin darkened his skin sufficiently to experience what it is like to be black.
