To Each of Our 174 Members One-By-One – for reasons explained in the 4 postings in Sec. 2 of www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org

Dear Friends,

**********
Cancellation of our Face-to-Face Meeting THIS WED evening March 18

ALTHOUGH technically Gov. Herbert’s Coronavirus Emergency Declaration of Thurs March 12 does not apply to our FACE-TO-FACE meeting THIS WED evening March 18 since we do not have 20 RSVP’s --

NONETHELESS, we are cancelling the FACE-TO-FACE aspect of the meeting.

***********
MODUS VIVENDI FOR OUR “MEETING”

Although Skype claims to be able to accommodate 25 participants, we have found that having more than 5-6 members participating by Skype destroys the character of a meeting in terms of inter-action, spontaneity, etc., etc.

Since at this point there are 11 RSVP’s, we will conduct the business of our cancelled March 18 meeting by e-mail.

**********
FIRST ITEM OF BUSINESS

At the beginning of each monthly meeting, the participants vote for the topic for the next meeting from among those posted in Sec. 3 of www.ReadingLiberally-SaltLake.org.

Please e-mail me by Wed March 18 your vote.

[Since our April 15 meeting will probably also have to be cancelled, the vote is probably for the topic for a meeting on Wed evening May 13.]

**********
SECOND ITEM OF BUSINESS

The Suggested Discussion Outline for our March 18 meeting was posted this past Wed morning at viewtopic.php?f=585&t=1903&sid=88b7ea6e ... 5dfd5d6f65.

Its final Section E concludes with a proposal to re-address our 5/16/2018 Six-Degrees-Of-Separation E-mail Campaign to “Resurrect and Reinvigorate McCain-Feingold Public Financing” -- the text of which is available at viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1753&sid=88b7ea6eb ... 5dfd5d6f65.

Public financing has been available in Presidential Campaigns since 1976. In 2002, the McCain-Feingold Act made substantial modifications to the law. McCain-Feingold was approved by the U.S. Supreme Court in all important respects in McConnell vs. Federal Election Commission (2003). However, public financing has not been used by the major-party candidates beginning in 2008 because it requires any recipient who elects to receive public financing to forego any private campaign financing -- and the levels of public financing have been pitifully low. Nevertheless, it would be “child’s play” for any attorney to draft legislative changes that (A) extend public financing to Senatorial/Congressional campaigns, and (B) MOST IMPORTANTLY, provide levels of public financing equal to what would be available to any opponents from campaign contributions, such as gearing it to the amount of campaign contributions being received by competitors (or to recent historical levels if all competing candidates have chosen public financing).

Our 5/16/2018 e-mail campaign was addressed to Sen. McCain himself.

The current proposal is to re-address it (with appropriate modifications) to Meghan McCain and her colleagues on ABC’s “The View” who presumably are patriotic and can champion the cause for as long as it takes.

Please let me know by March 18 whether you have any objection to the proposal.

[Or, of course, whether you have any questions or comments.]

I am very sorry that we will not be able to meet face-to-face this coming Wednesday.

But am happy that our alternate modus vivendi will optimize our chances of meeting again soon.

Your friend,

John K.
