Suggested Discussion Outline - "An Elegant Defense – The Extraordinary New Science of the Immune System – A Tale in Four Lives"


In the not-so-distant past, our tradition was –

“to devote the first portion of each monthly meeting to going through the focus book, chapter by chapter, to invite important comments that are specific to a particular chapter. After all, each participant (except, perhaps, “first timers”) has taken the time to read the focus book and her/his opportunity to opine on anything in the focus book should NOT be denied.”

Earlier this year, we were forced to abandon that tradition because –

(1) Instead of raising only “important comments,” many trivial comments were raised, and

(2) The time required for comments, both important and trivial, consumed most of the two hours scheduled for most meetings, leaving little time for the rest of Suggested Discussion Outlines.

HOWEVER, the sub-sub title of this month’s focus book (A Tale in Four Lives) also tells the tale of how difficult, if not impossible, it is to formulate a Suggested Discussion Outline.

ACCORDINGLY, it is respectfully suggested that we discuss each of the book’s PARTS (which together comprise an impossible 55 chapters) in succession –

Part I – Lives In The Balance (Chapters 1-4)

Part II – The Immune System and The Festival of Life (Chapters 5-20)

Part III – Bob (Chapters 21-26)

Part IV – Linda and Merredith (Chapters 27-35)

Part V – Jason (Chapters 36-45)

Part VI – Homecoming (Chapters 46-55)

If you wish to make an IMPORTANT COMMENT vis-à-vis any Part as we take them in order, please be prepared to explain since we are a non-partisan public-policy study/action organization –

(1) How your comment/observation relates to personal and/or community health, and/or

(2) If we have a minimum quorum for launching an e-mail campaign directed at one or more of our country’s decision makers, what you would suggest.
