Suggested Discussion Outline

Post by johnkarls »

.

The following outline is respectfully suggested –

*******************************
A. Comments About Specific Chapters of “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” – 60 minutes

Our tradition is to devote the first portion of each monthly meeting to going through the focus book, chapter by chapter, to invite important comments that are specific to a particular chapter. After all, each participant (except, perhaps, “first timers”) have taken the time to read the focus book and her/his opportunity to opine on anything in the focus book should NOT be denied.

HOWEVER, there are 31 chapters organized into 7 parts AND EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT TRYING TO COVER 31 CHAPTERS IN 60 MINUTES IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!

ACCORDINGLY, it is respectfully suggested that we spend 8 minutes on each of the 7 parts in order to pace ourselves AND TO AHCHIEVE some restraint on judging whether a particular point is worth discussing.

“Caste” Parts --

1. Toxins in the Permafrost and Heat Rising All Around

2. The Arbitrary Construction of Human Divisions

3. The Eight Pillars of Caste

4. The Tentacles of Caste

5. The Consequences of Caste

6. Backlash

7. Awakening

B. Creation and Discussion of Two Lists Re “What To Do” – 60 minutes

It is respectfully suggested that we devote the second hour of our meeting to creating and discussing two lists --

1. What our author Isabel Wilkerson has posited are the prescriptions for America’s present caste predicament; and

2. What we think would be important prescriptions but were NOT prescribed by Isabel Wilkerson.

FOR THE SAKE OF GOOD ORDER, LET’S TACKLE B(1) COMPLETELY BEFORE ADDRESSING B(2).
