Dear John,

I read with interest Q&A-7 thru Q&A-9 at the tail end of the Second Short Quiz. They described –

(1) A 8/19/2019 presentation by Proton Technologies (a Calgary Alberta-Canada corporation) to the Goldschmidt Conference announcing that it had invented (and obtained patents for) a method of obtaining vast amounts of hydrogen economically which involves injecting oxygen into reservoirs of heavy oil and tar sands, and into coal seams, in order to separate the hydrogen from the oil/tar/coal and thereby enable the hydrogen to float to the surface through hydrogen filters that will trap behind all remaining material including carbon for sequestration in situ; and

(2) Reading Liberally - Salt Lake’s 11/13/2019 campaign entitled “Saving Global Warming Solution From Being Killed” which was sent to the Assistant U.N. Secretary General for UNEP and also to the Director General of the UN’s Worldwide Intellectual Property Organization recommending invalidation of any Proton patents if Proton were acquired by any malefactor (e.g., Saudi Arabia) that wanted to put the technology “on ice.”

Have there been any subsequent developments to report?

Your friend,

Solutions

Dear Solutions,

Thank you for your inquiry.

As a fellow “movie buff,” you should not be surprised that this topic has a PREQUEL which you might recall our studying on several occasions.

By way of background, burning hydrogen creates no greenhouse gases – only water (2H2 + O2 > 2H2O).

Two decades ago, both Europe and California invested heavily in a “hydrogen highway” comprising zillions of hydrogen re-fueling stations.

Indeed, a lot of automobile manufacturers tweaked their gasoline engines to run on hydrogen with BMW even offering a model that could run on either gasoline or hydrogen depending on local availability during long-distance trips outside California or Europe.

Unfortunately, the lack of further development of Europe’s and California’s “hydrogen highway” was due to the costliness AT THAT TIME of obtaining hydrogen. In other words, historically the only method of obtaining large quantities of hydrogen had been electrolysis of water (2H2O > 2H2 + O2) which requires as much energy as is available when the hydrogen is burned (2H2 + O2 > 2H2O).

Accordingly, it seemed like the DAWNING OF A NEW AGE when Proton Technologies announced that it had developed and patented technology for economically extracting hydrogen from reservoirs of heavy oil and tar sands, and from coal seams AT A FRACTION OF THE COST OF USING OIL & GAS (which was even considerably cheaper at the time of Proton Technologies’ 8/19/2019 announcement - $59.04/bbl for Brent crude).

A quick review of public information about Proton Technologies, which we knew was a publicly-traded company based in Calgary Canada, indicates its technology is still available for licensing.

HOWEVER, there is no way of ascertaining quickly whether malefactors such as those envisioned in our 11/13/2019 campaign, might have purchased enough stock while skirting public-disclosure rules to make the licensing fees uneconomic and effectively kill this global-warming solution.

[I am guessing this scenario is not likely since even the best non-disclosure agreements would probably fail to halt rumors from reaching the public domain.]

NEVERTHELESS, as usual I am the proverbial “one-armed wallpaper hanger” who doesn’t have time to “chase this rabbit” further.

So I would be interested in whatever you discover in the event you have any spare time to pursue this.

Your friend,

John K.
