Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s SAFE Schools Act – Text and Context and Proposed Six-Degrees-of-Separation E-mail Campaign

Post by johnkarls »

.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn re-introduced in the 118th Congress that convened Jan 2023 her SAFE Schools Act (S.1107).

The 4-page text is available for download here –

Per https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-con ... 07?s=1&r=5, S.1107 was introduced 3/30/2023 with one co-sponsor (Sen. Hagerty (R-TN)), and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

On 4/11/2023, per https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-con ... 91?s=1&r=5, the same bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R TN-03) as H.R. 2491 entitled “Securing Aid for Every (SAFE) School Act” and was referred to two committees – (1) Judiciary, and (2) Education and the Workforce.

On 4/26/2023, per https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-con ... rs?s=1&r=5, H.R. 2491 picked up two co-sponsors – (1) Rep, Diana Harshbarger (R TN-01) and (2) Rep. Rudy Yakym (R IN-02).

CONTEXT –

*****
FIRST, it is curious that NONE OF NASHVILLE’S 3 REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVES – Rep, Andy Ogles (R TN-05), Rep. John Rose (R TN-06) nor Rep. Mark Green (R TN-07) – co-sponsored the legislation.

After all, the 3/27/2023 Covenant School shooting occurred in Nashville.

BTW, prior to the 2020 census, Nashville and Davidson County in which it sits had been completely within Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District and had been represented by a Democrat since 1875. Following the 2020 census, Nashville was gerrymandered into 3 Congressional districts, all of which (as mentioned above) are now represented by Republicans.

*****
SECOND, it appears that Sen. Blackburn’s bill will die again in the 118th Congress because it is running into the “buzz saw” of the Debt-Limit Negotiations in which the House Republican Caucus is attempting to cut spending.

Which, BTW, probably accounts for why none of Nashville’s three Republican U.S. Representatives co-sponsored H.R. 2491.

PROPOSED SIX-DEGREES-OF-SEPARATION E-MAIL CAMPAIGN

Obviously, S.1107 and H.R. 2491 could benefit from one of our “Six Degrees of Separation” E-mail Campaigns in which we ask our 223 members (1) to send an already-prepared e-mail to their U.S. Senators and Representatives and (2) to request all of their friends and acquaintances in an unending chain to do the same.
