SHORT-QUIZ SUGGESTED ANSWERS

Question 1.

In a typical inner-city environment, what percentage of the households are headed by a single adult??? By a single adult who is a drug addict??? By a single-adult drug-addict who turns over any receipts (e.g., welfare) directly to the pusher, so that the kids have to steal just in order to eat???

Suggested Answer 1.

When in the 1990's John Karls was the sponsor and chief benefactor of an "I Have A Dream"® program that tutored/mentored 200 inner-city Dreamers from third grade through HS graduation and guaranteed their college tuition, and when he also served as the volunteer treasurer of the national "I Have A Dream"® Foundation that oversaw 180 similar projects in 50 American cities, the following were typical:

99% of households headed by a single adult!!!
90% of total households headed by a single adult who was a drug addict!!!
75-80% of total households headed by a single-adult addict who turned over any receipts (welfare, etc.) to the pusher, so the kids had to steal just in order to eat!!!

Question 2.

In a typical inner-city environment, what would be the greatest source of intellectual stimulation for the kids???

Suggested Answer 2.

A TV set, if the kids have been able to steal one!!!

Question 3.

In a typical inner-city environment, what would typically be the No. 1 career objective for young males??? The No. 2 career objective???

Suggested Answer 3.

No. 1 = to become a runner by third grade (pushers don't like to be arrested themselves so they recruit third graders as runners - a third-grader runner will make more than a Wall Street lawyer until he is busted).

No. 2 = NBA star -- any inner-city kid can play basketball if s/he can steal a pair of sneaks!!!

Question 4.

In a typical inner-city environment, what would typically be the No. 1 career objective for young females???

Suggested Answer 4.

No. 1 = girl friend of a runner.

Question 5.

How are public schools K-12 financed in America???

Suggested Answer 5.

Local property taxes - which means, of course, that inner-city public schools are NOT financed, since there is no property tax base!!!

Question 6.

How does this produce what Jonathan Kozol calls "Apartheid Schooling" in America and, in fact, Apartheid-"homelands" living patterns in the South African sense???

Suggested Answer 6.

Virtually all parents shop for a home in a nice suburb with a good school system. This means that inner-city kids whom "identical twin testing" (studying inner-city identical twins orphaned before their first birthday where one is adopted by an inner-city family and the other by a suburban family) consistently shows have IQ's identical to suburban kids, are left behind in the inner cities to perpetuate the cycle of America's permanent under-class!!!

Question 7.

Where will Barack Obama's two daughters attend school while he is President???

Suggested Answer 7.

Malia Obama (10) and Sasha Obama (7) will attend the Sidwell Friends School, the private academy that educates the children of much of Washington's elite. Vice-President-Elect Joe Biden's grandchildren attend Sidwell, as did Chelsea Clinton, where annual tuition is $30,000/year.

Question 8.

Where did Barack Obama's two daughters attend school when he was in the US Senate???

Suggested Answer 8.

They attended the private University of Chicago Laboratory School where tuition is $21,000/year.

Question 9.

Why do all "Limousine Liberals" who join the US Senate or Congress have to live in the suburbs???

Suggested Answer 9.

Because they don't want their kids to attend public schools in Washington DC. Typical was the experience of Mary L. Landrieu (D-LA) who, shortly after being elected to the US Senate in 1996, tried to put her two adopted children into exclusive private schools in Washington DC - causing a firestorm of protest from her inner-city constituents in New Orleans who blasted her for opposing vouchers and school choice for their kids who were condemned to attending inner-city public schools in New Orleans, while she put her own kids in private schools.

This is another instance of Democratic Party schizophrenia -- trying to bridge two unbridgeable positions!!! In this case, "carrying water" for the teachers' unions while screwing the base!!!

In this regard, it might be worthwhile knowing that of the 180 "I Have A Dream" sponsors, almost all of them loathed the public schools to which their Dreamers were condemned!!! And nearly half of them founded and financed their own "charter schools" for their Dreamers to attend!!!

Question 10.

Where did Thurgood Marshall's two sons (his only two children) attend boarding school??? (NB: Thurgood Marshall argued the landmark school-desegregation case of Brown v. Board of Education before the Supreme Court in his capacity as General Counsel of the NAACP - 13 years later he became the first African-American to join the Supreme Court, serving for 24 distinguished years!!!)

Suggested Answer 10.

Phillips Exeter Academy, one of the top 3-4 boarding/prep schools in America.

Question 11.

What did Thurgood Marshall say about his choice of private school over public schools for his sons???

Suggested Answer 11.

Every parent tries to do the best s/he can by her/his own children.

EXTRA-CREDIT QUESTIONS

1. Why have K-12 public schools been financed locally - whereas public colleges and universities have been financed by states (and by considerable research grants from the federal government)???

2. Is there any prohibition in the U.S. Constitution against the federal government building an elementary or secondary school that it will finance and control???

3. Since "identical twin testing" (studying inner-city identical twins orphaned before their first birthday where one is adopted by an inner-city family and the other by a suburban family) consistently shows that inner-city kids have IQ's identical to suburban kids, what is/are the missing ingredient(s) that would break the cycle of America's permanent apartheid under class???

4. Jonothan Kozol reports (p. 25 of "The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America") that when Martin Luther King H.S. opened in 1975 less than a block from Lincoln Center in Manhattan, the N.Y. Times observed "it was seen as a promising effort to integrate white, black and Hispanic students in a thriving neighborhood that held one of the city's cultural gems" but became an abysmal failure in that regard. (A) Is the assessment of the N.Y. Times accurate??? (B) What implications does the MLK/NYC experience have for our proposed federal desegregated-school model???
