Realpolitik - Has Taiwan Been Prudent Enough To Buy/Develop Sufficient Nuclear Weapons To Deter China?

Post by solutions »

.

This e-mail exchange was posted 4/2/2025 when our focus for our April 16 Zoom meeting was “The Avoidable War: The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict between the US and Xi Jinping's China” by Kevin Rudd – please see viewtopic.php?f=846&t=2634&sid=604868a6 ... b7ddb04888.

However, the e-mail exchange actually pertains to this month’s focus book and the NYC Harvard Club’s 4/2/2025 webinar featuring Kerry Brown on “Why Taiwan Matters” -- and the attempt to ask Prof. Brown the question presented in the title of this posting.

Dear John,

I’m sorry an emergency forced me to miss the subject NYC Harvard Club Zoom webinar this morning -- about Prof. Kerry Brown's book which had been posted 3/11/2025 in our website’s Sec. 3 (Possible Topics for Future Meetings) at viewtopic.php?f=150&t=2440&sid=38ec471e ... 7237edaa94.

Did you ask Prof. Brown any questions?

Your friend,

Solutions

Dear Solutions,

Thank you very much for your e-mail. I hope your emergency wasn’t serious.

As you know, the advantage of participating in a NYC Harvard Club Zoom webinar (vs. merely watching the recording afterwards) is the opportunity to ask questions.

And I had decided to ask the question comprising the “possible topic” for one of our future Reading Liberally meetings posted 12/3/2023 in our website’s Sec. 3 (Possible Topics for Future Meetings) --

IAW Realpolitik, Has Taiwan Been Prudent Enough To Buy and/or Develop Sufficient Nuclear Weapons To Deter China?

[The posting which includes voluminous material is located at viewtopic.php?f=150&t=2440&sid=38ec471e ... 7237edaa94]

I typed the question into the Zoom question box as soon as the webinar began so, of course, it was by far first in the queue.

HOWEVER, although Prof. Brown concluded his remarks in the first 30 minutes leaving the traditional 30 minutes for Q&A --

Mark Martinez, the NYC Harvard Club Program Committee member serving as moderator, decided NOT to present my question to Prof. Brown!!!

A tremendous breach of protocol!!!

Because the questions are usually presented in the order submitted!!!

Unfortunately, all of the questions Mark Martinez did present were obvious and their answers predictable.

Though, of course, I was expecting Prof. Brown to claim ignorance whether or not he knows the answer to my question.

In other words, the purpose of the question was to cause other NYC Harvard Club members participating in the webinar – usually several hundred – to focus on the issue.

Hopefully, Taiwan has long since focused on it – at least since 12/3/2023 – though forcing several hundred members of the NYC Harvard Club (the largest and most influential networking organization in the world since, inter alia, the club had 15,000 members the last time I checked) would IMHO have remedied the situation if Taiwan has failed to focus so far.

If Taiwan has failed, and continues to fail courtesy of Mark Martinez’s unpardonable breach of protocol, may history record that Mark Martinez was to blame for Taiwan’s fall!!!

Thank you again for your e-mail.

Your friend,

John K.
