Because even though I was “separated from active duty” in the Navy in 1970, I have never resigned my Naval Officer commission.

Yes, it was widely reported in the media that this was true.

And such information would have been classified as Top Secret.

And, under the rules (at least at that time) for dealing with Top Secret information, you could NOT repeat classified information that you know to be true -- even if it has appeared in the media.

HOWEVER, I do NOT know whether such information is true or not.

ACCORDINGLY, I am at liberty to report what was widely reported, accompanied by the disclaimer that I do NOT know whether it is true.

BTW, my guess is that it is true.

AND THAT it was officially leaked to the media by the government to calm the public over the shock of Sputnik only 13 years earlier – igniting the space race.

AFTER ALL, Sputnik implied the U.S. was behind the USSR in inter-continental ballistic missiles.

AND the capabilities of our spy satellites were certainly part of Kissinger’s policy of MAD (mutually assured destruction)!!!
