SUGGESTED DISCUSSION OUTLINE

A. PRELIMINARY ISSUE. After President Obama took immediate steps to (1) close the Guantanamo Bay prison, (2) appoint as Attorney General Eric Holder (who has been publicly vociferous against aggressive interrogation tactics of terrorists), (3) postpone all of the military tribunals that were beginning under the new procedures enacted by Congress following the recent Supreme Court decision WITH A VIEW TO TRYING TERROR SUSPECTS ONLY IN CIVILIAN COURTS IF THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT WILL NOT COMPROMISE FUTURE INTELLIGENCE EFFORTS AND OTHERWISE LETTING THEM GO FREE, (4) etc. – will the American public forgive the Democratic Party if one or more American cities is/are destroyed in the next four years with American deaths measured in the millions???

B. FOLLOWING A CONCENSUS (OR LACK THEREOF) ON THE PRELIMINARY ISSUE, IT IS RESPECTFULLY SUGGESTED WE CONTINUE DISCUSSING ITS RAMIFICATIONS IN TERMS OF (B-1) SPECIFIC NATIONS OR NON-STATE ACTORS, AND/OR (B-2) SPECIFIC THEMES OR CONCEPTS.

B-1. SPECIFIC NATIONS OR NON-STATE ACTORS

B-1-a. North Korea.
B-1-b. Iran.
B-1-c. Afghanistan.
B-1-d. Pakistan.
B-1-e. Al Qaeda.
B-1-f. Israel – Hamas – Hezbollah.
B-1-g. Other.

B-2. SPECIFIC THEMES OR CONCEPTS

B-2-a. Terrorism – biological and nuclear.
B-2-b. Terrorism in terms of non-state actors.
B-2-c. Emerging world powers (China, India, Russia).
B-2-d. United Nations.
B-2-e. World public opinion (and the low regard of the third world for the U.N.).
B-2-f. Islam.
B-2-g. Democracy.
B-2-h. Climate control – global warming.
B-2-i. Environmental laws (or lack thereof, including the competitive disadvantage to American workers from the lack thereof elsewhere in the world).
B-2-j. Oil.
B-2-k. Poverty.
B-2-l. Other.

Editorial Note – The Brzezinski – Scowcroft – Ignatius conversations are a quick read – and quite interesting because of the surprising amount of agreement among the three on various issues such as how they all agree that the United Nations is a terrible idea and they would never create it today if they were starting over (though since it already exists, it might, perhaps, be worth trying to improve rather than being scrapped entirely)!!!
